The Perfect Diwali Eye Makeup Tutorial For Almond-Shaped Eyes
Have you ever noticed how a particular eye makeup look isn’t quite looking the same on your eyes versus the reference? Well, that’s because eye makeup usually doesn’t fit a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach. While the products can be the same, most of the time the placements and techniques play a huge role in enhancing your eye shape—hence it needs to be tweaked accordingly. Other than hooded eyes, one of the most common eye shapes amongst Indians has to be almond. Defined after its nutty namesake, almond shaped eyes often have a natural lift at the outer corners of the eyes. The crease of the lids are more prominent and extend all the way to the outer corners too.
We asked Diego Dalla Palma Milano’s National Makeup Artist, Leonardo de Luca to break down a Diwali eye makeup look for almond-shaped eyes—and it’s the perfect go-to for the festivities too. Explaining the look a little more in detail he says, “I left the eyelid lighter and emphasised the lengths with an eye-liner. The use of warm colours really brings out the amber skin and the almond-shaped eye will be well highlighted.” With the right colours, shading, and placements, this canvas can surely be transformed into a beautiful painting, and de Luca breaks down how!

Step 1: The Base
Use a dot of primer on your eyelids and blend it in. This will create a seamless base for your eye makeup, and will also make the wear last through an evening Diwali party that extends into the wee hours.
Step 2: Apply A Deeper Brown
Using a tapered eyeshadow brush, begin tapping a warm brown matte hue into the centre of your crease and sweep it all the way to the outer corner of your eye. Make sure to blend the eyeshadow in (even till the start of your brow bone)—this ensures that the colour appears seamless with the hue looking more intense towards the outer corner of your eyes.
Tip: Looking for that sharp wing? Use a scotch tape near the outer corner of your eye to create a stencil and guide you when applying your eyeshadow. Once you remove the tape, use a blending brush to soften the lines and make the outer corner look more smokey and gradual.
Step 3: Go In With The Warmer, Lighter Brown
Top off your intense brown hue with a warmer brown with orange undertones. Gently sweep this hue into your crease and blend it all the way to the outer corner of your eye. While blending, you can also move towards the inner corner of your eye—this adds a wash of colour without looking too stark.
Step 4: Make It Festive Ready
If you want to add a little bling for the festivities, an optional step in this look would be to give it a touch of sparkle. Use a shimmer or glitter base eyeshadow in a warm-toned copper, brown, or gold hue, and tap it in the centre of your eyelid. Blend it in a little, but make sure the glitter doesn’t go all the way till the end of the outer corner of your wing. You can even add a hint of highlighter to the inner corners for a dazzling pop of shine—this’ll make the eyes look a little bigger.
Step 5: Bring On The Pencil
As de Luca mentions, this eye makeup look for almond-shaped eyes is tied in by the liner—so now is the time to go all out. Using an intense kohl pencil or kajal in a black or deep brown hue, fill in your waterline. Start small but intensify the lines on your lower and upper lash line—extend the lines from the inner corner to the outer corner of your eye. Using a smudging brush or q-tip, gently soften the lines to create a light smokey effect.
Step 6: Top Off With Eyeliner
Top off your kajal with liquid eyeliner on your upper lash line. Here’s where you use a steady hand to create a free-flowing wing that extends to somewhere in line with the tail of your eyebrow. Make sure that the wing isn’t too dramatic and follows the natural shape of your eye. Connect the end of your wing to the lower lash line to tie it all in.
Tip: Do not ever apply liquid eyeliner to your lower lash line. It can spread into your eyes and irritate them.
Step 7: Throw In Your Mascara
Lastly, you want to finish off with a black mascara that will lengthen and curl your eyelashes. You can either go all out for that falsies-esque effect, however, we recommend to keep it more natural so that the focus is more on the eyeshadow than your eyelashes.
Tip: Remove the excess product from your mascara wand and then apply it. This creates a more natural effect and doesn’t leave your lashes clumpy.
Bonus Step 8: Strengthen Your Brow Game
No eye makeup is complete without strong brows, so make sure to fill in those strays with a brow pencil close to the shade of your brow hair. Blend it in with a spoolie so that it appears more natural.
& Viola! You’re now ready to rock a dazzling Diwali makeup look that’s sure to turn heads.
