Fougère

Fougère, a French term meaning “fern-like,” is a fragrance family in perfumery known for its fresh, aromatic and slightly woody scent. This family of fragrances is built around a base of oakmoss, coumarin, and lavender, with additional notes of geranium, bergamot, and other herbal and floral notes. When you smell a fougère fragrance, you can expect a crisp, clean and fresh opening, followed by a warm and woody heart, and a base of mossy, earthy notes.

The fragrance family was created in 1882 by Houbigant, a Parisian perfume house, with the launch of the fragrance ‘Fougère Royale’, which became an instant success. This fragrance was a revolutionary departure from the traditional floral scents of the time and was based on a new accord that combined the freshness of lavender with the warmth of coumarin and the earthy, mossy scent of oakmoss. Today, this fragrance family has evolved to include a wide range of fragrances, from classic masculine scents to more contemporary unisex fragrances.

While often associated with men’s fragrances due to its classic, traditional appeal, it has also gained popularity as a gender-neutral scent. It is a versatile fragrance that can be worn year-round and is suitable for both casual and formal occasions.
