Overlining

Overlining is a makeup technique that involves using a lip liner to outline the lips slightly beyond their natural edge, creating the illusion of fuller lips. Overlining is once again coming back into fashion and in the modern context, one overlines with a shade that’s 1 shade darker than the natural lip colour and uses a high shine gloss to achieve ‘gym lips’. This technique is particularly popular among those who desire more volume and definition in their lips but do not want to undergo invasive cosmetic procedures. Overlining can also be used to correct asymmetry or imbalances in the lips’ shape, resulting in a more balanced and proportionate appearance.

How to overline?

When attempting to overline, it is important to choose the correct shade of lip liner. The liner should be only slightly darker than the natural lip color, but if you’re feeling experimental, you can use a shade that’s contrasting to your lip colour. The liner should also be sharpened to a fine point to achieve precision in application.

To begin the overlining process, start by defining the Cupid’s bow, the V-shaped area in the center of the upper lip. Using the lip liner, trace just above the natural line of the lips, beginning at the Cupid’s bow and working outward toward the corners. For the bottom lip, trace just below the natural lip line, starting from the center and working outward.Once the lips are outlined, use the liner to fill in the lips with color. This will help the color to last longer and prevent it from feathering or bleeding. To finish the look, apply lipstick or gloss, taking care not to extend beyond the lip liner. A small amount of highlighter can also be applied to the center of the lips to create the illusion of fullness.
While overlining can be a great way to enhance the appearance of the lips, it is important to use it in moderation and not to go too far beyond the natural lip line. With the right technique and tools, overlining can be a simple and effective way to achieve fuller, more defined lips.
